Week 5 Social Media for Strategic Communication Chapter 9-10

For our final week of class, we read through chapters 9 and 10. I want to focus in on chapter 10 which is about the numbers behind social media. Parts of this chapter I used for our Pinterest assignment last week. In that assignment I looked at social media measurements and different ways to measure social media accounts. Using this you can find out what is important and what works better. This is important so in the future you know what works which helps make the overall process easier. Say a content creator makes 5 different posts with different content and catered for different people. You could look at the data which in this case would be views, likes, retweets, gained followers, etc. These stats could help you find out what works better for the future. Another important topic brought up is social media budget. To most people social media budget is zero. Once you get to a certain size or maybe someone is trying to get noticed. A social media budget is useful. Most organizations

Week 5 PR/SM Blog

I am an avid sports fan and with all the sports happening this summer it has been exciting. You got the Euros happening in Europe, Copa America in South America, and world cup qualifying for soccer. There are the NBA playoffs going on. I am not the biggest NBA fan, but my Phoenix Suns are great this year, so I am invested. The NHL playoffs are going on and it is crazy this year.  I am going to focus in on the Euros and something that has happened in the past day. As it is pride month companies and organizations show their support usually. A Euro game between Hungary and Germany is happening today and the stadium in Munich wanted to light up their arena in rainbow colors. They wanted to do this since Hungary just enacted a law saying that the sharing of LGBTQ content to minors is illegal. The mayor of Munich wanted to protest the new law. The main reason this is getting a lot of attention is UEFA denied their appeal to do this for the game. UEFA is the organization running the Euros tou

Week 5 ONU Blog

I cannot believe it is already the final week for our summer class. This class has made the first part of the summer fly by for me. I cannot wait to get back onto campus this upcoming fall. For me this is weird. Usually, I am excited to go back to school to see my friends and not necessarily everything else, but this year feels different. I think this has to do with me switching majors and Covid regulations going away. Last week I was on vacation, and it was refreshing to be able to walk around in restaurants and public places without wearing a mask. I guess I just want to go back to college and have things go back to normal. I miss being able to go to tournaments with the ONU frisbee team. I miss being able to collaborate with classmates in the classroom. I miss being able to go on the Habitat for Humanity service trips over winter and spring. As well as work week before the school year starts. I think the biggest reason is I finally feel like I am coming into my own. The first

Week 4 Social Media for Strategic Communication Chapter 7-8

This week we read chapter 7 and 8 of Social Media for Strategic Communication. Chapter 8 caught my attention this week. Audience segmentation is extremely important for people using social media who are trying to expand their brand and make their content catered to their audience. I see people all the time try to do audience segmentation and they struggle to find the right blend. There are so many factors that can affect what people post. Even the platform can change what someone posts. One of my friends has 290k follows on TikTok and he uses audience segmentation. He has built up a reputation of what he posts and his viewers expect certain content on his TikTok. Especially on TikTok most people only post 1 type of content. He is targeting a specific genre of content like funny skits. Then on YouTube you have a person or people that post certain content targeting a specific audience. This builds a community. This a group of YouTube I watch. They all post funny/joking around conte

Week 4 Social Media/ PR Blog

This week in class we had a Pinterest assignment. I have never used Pinterest before so it was definitely an experience. I have never really heard much about Pinterest. I have never known anyone who uses Pinterest. Because of this I had no idea has to use the site. It was weird I guess using a social media site for the first time. I have forgotten what that feels like. But after doing this assignment for our social media class I have a better understanding of Pinterest I think so. The pins for a topic on a social media board I found to be super helpful and on the topic. Saying this I do not know if I would use the site again. I talked about it in my assignment that I would have to play around with the site more to see if I would actually use Pinterest again personally or professional. I think the site does a good job of its layout and how it tracks your information on your account and topics. I think I could probably use Pinterest and it would be helpful but I am someone who does

Week 4 ONU Blog

Another week another ONU blog. An emerging part of my ONU life is being apart of the Esports program. Coming into ONU I only found out that ONU had a Esports team once I got to campus for fall semester. The program only had 2 games so I was not involved with the program my freshmen year. Sophomore year this past year was my first year in the program. Troy the Esports director at ONU brought on the game I play which is Rocket League. This is a big deal to me because it has allowed me to pursue a passion of mine and compete at a high level. Without the Esports program at ONU I would never of had the chance to play in the high-level tournaments that I play in for Rocket League. In the past weeks I have talked about ONU being like family. With Esports I think it feels like family the most for me at ONU. Videogames have been an integral part of my life growing up. Being a part of a program and team of people who are serious about completing and playing videogames has been an amazing e

Week 3 Social Media for Strategic Communication Chapters 4-6

This week we read Chapters 4-6 in Social Media for Strategic Communication. Chapter 6 specifically stood out to me. In anything we do we should have a plan of what we want to accomplish. Chapter 6 talks about strategic planning for social media. I found this intriguing because most people who use social media do this to some extent. When someone is making a social media post, they subconsciously think about pre-existing information on whatever they are going to post. While individuals may not explicitly think about what they want from their social media post. People post to get a reaction, or they have an end goal to what they posted. They may not necessarily follow every step laid out in chapter 6, but the mindset is similar. This chapter opened my mind to what companies think about potentially when posting on their social media’s. The end goal of a company is to make money. So, when they are doing social media posts whether it is promoting or just creating conversation online com

Week 3 ONU Blog

Another week another ONU blog. A huge part of my life is service. I enjoy helping others and do service for those who need it or ask for it. Through Habitat for Humanity, I have been able to do that the past 2 years on campus. Even with covid going on this past year I was still able to take part in service projects. But my freshmen I had an amazing experience going on the spring service trip down to Valdosta Georgia. I got to make some new friends and got to work with the local community building houses for those in need. Honestly is my best experience at ONU so far. Doing service is one of my passions and I am grateful that I can have the time to be able to help those who need it. I am glad that I can pursue this passion of mine at ONU.   There are plenty of other great opportunities in service work in and around campus. In my opinion I value service so much because I know how it feels to be helped when you need it. Having been on the receiving end of getting help and how it made

Week 3 PR/Social Media Blog Post

The Podcast I did is about the YouTube's algorithm and I also talk about how Twitch does not have a algorithm really.  Here is the link to my podcast https://www.podbean.com/ew/pb-wrqsu-1057cb0 Here is my rough outlined notes of what I wanted to talk about on my podcast Welcome to the first episode of Ryan’s World Podcast. The main topic that I will be talking about is YouTube’s algorithm and Twitch’s non algorithm. While it seems like the algorithm is better in 2021 on YouTube it is nowhere near perfect. And the fact that no one knows how the algorithm works. Many YouTubers over the years have found that certain strategies work better than others. So, I am going to bring up what’s wrong with the YouTube algorithm and then a few ways people have found that seem to help work around the issue. Talk about Twitch and how the are even worse than YouTube is promoting people’s channels.  The biggest issue with the YouTube algorithm is trying to build a foundation when someone first st

Week 2 Social Media for Strategic Communication Chapters 1-3

Here are some of my thoughts and takeaways from the first 3 chapters of “Social Media for Strategic Communication”. Chapter 1: Remove your emotional self when interacting online and learn from the situation. This is something I can attest to within the Esports program. If you use emotion when talking online, it makes things messy and clouds what you are trying to get out of the conversation. This is something on the Esports team we implement when talking about what everyone needs to work on to get better at the game. So, using this mind set for online communication can help you in situation when talking in person as well. It makes conversation easier to understand and allows for transparency. Chapter 2: Being self-aware while using social media is super-duper important. At the time you post or share something I may be funny but later you realize that it was dumb and can hurt your reputation or an organizations reputation. You post a bunch of “funny” posts when you are in high schoo

Week 2 ONU Blog

Another blog about ONU life. I am apart of Greek life on campus, and I am going to talk about how it has help me with perspective and perception about trying new things. Coming into college Greek life was not on my mind at all. I did not think I was a Greek life person. I knew about the stigma surrounding Greek life. Nevertheless, during welcome weekend I went to Greek-a-Palooza. I had called my sister, who went to ONU and was part of a sorority, and asked her what fraternities she thinks I would like or what fraternities are more chill and relaxed. I went around and just started talking to some of the organizations and when I got to Sigma Pi, I recognized one their members who went to my high school. I spent most of the time with the Sigma Pi guys during Greek-a-Palooza. They gave me a card to contact them if I was interested in coming to some events to see if I potentially wanted to join. Then I forgot about it. I broke both my wrists in the first week of school. I left campus fo
