Here are some of my thoughts and takeaways from the first 3 chapters of “Social Media for Strategic Communication”.
Chapter 1: Remove your emotional self when interacting
online and learn from the situation. This is something I can attest to within
the Esports program. If you use emotion when talking online, it makes things
messy and clouds what you are trying to get out of the conversation. This is
something on the Esports team we implement when talking about what everyone
needs to work on to get better at the game. So, using this mind set for online
communication can help you in situation when talking in person as well. It
makes conversation easier to understand and allows for transparency.
Chapter 2: Being self-aware while using social media
is super-duper important. At the time you post or share something I may be
funny but later you realize that it was dumb and can hurt your reputation or an
organizations reputation. You post a bunch of “funny” posts when you are in
high school and college and then you go to get a job and they look at your
social media and see you have posted some unsavory messages about certain
issues or topics. Then you do not get the job. This is something that has come
up with being a part of the Esports program. While we play these online games
that usually allow for banter and making jokes towards other players. We must
watch and be careful what we say and do because it reflects the university if
we get in trouble online and get banned for a period from a game for whatever
reason. Or we make a post online saying how we destroyed a team and make fun of
them. That can come back and hurt the school in a negative way.
Chapter 3: Personal brands are interesting because
some people online have a persona and do not act like they do online or on
camera like they do in real life. They build up this reputation online from
what tons of people see online and not how they act in real life. It is hard to
build up reputation and easy to tear it down. I have seen loads of people who
are online influencers make a mistake outside the online social
