The Podcast I did is about the YouTube's algorithm and I also talk about how Twitch does not have a algorithm really.

Here is my rough outlined notes of what I wanted to talk about on my podcast

Welcome to the first episode of Ryan’s World Podcast. The main topic that I will be talking about is YouTube’s algorithm and Twitch’s non algorithm. While it seems like the algorithm is better in 2021 on YouTube it is nowhere near perfect. And the fact that no one knows how the algorithm works. Many YouTubers over the years have found that certain strategies work better than others.

So, I am going to bring up what’s wrong with the YouTube algorithm and then a few ways people have found that seem to help work around the issue. Talk about Twitch and how the are even worse than YouTube is promoting people’s channels.

The biggest issue with the YouTube algorithm is trying to build a foundation when someone first starts their channel. That is the hardest part of YouTube is in the beginning getting people to find and see your videos. YouTube still has not done much to help small and new content creators to help them get exposure.

There is a tab on YouTube called explore but honestly most of the channel on the explore page are channel who already have a foundation built. Some of the time the channels in explore are some of the biggest channels on YouTube.

You hear a lot of YouTuber say, “the game is the game”. Meaning they will do what they must do to potentially get their video to get good algorithm. I mentioned earlier that people have found strategies that seem to work well. This goes along with “the game is the game”.

These strategies I will be talking about come from Dream. A YouTube who has blown up in the past year and is now one of the biggest Minecraft creators on the planet.

The first strategy is trend-jacking. Whatever is trending creating content around that in whatever niche you are creating content in. Basically, when a bigger YouTuber produces content in your niche you make videos about that, so you have a higher chance of getting recommended by YouTube to get more views.

The second strategy is creating an algorithm beater. On YouTube channels try to get high retention and longer watch time. These 2 factors can help in getting videos recommended. Dream created a new Minecraft series that had both which most YouTubers cannot do.

But even with these 2 strategies there is no guarantee that a video will get picked up by the algorithm. For this specific YouTuber this is what helped him get his channel off the ground.

Saying this it is still better than Twitch. Twitch is like YouTube, but Twitch only has live streams and therefore has no algorithm. The only promotion on twitch for channels is on the home page of twitch the is a menu at the top with a few streams you can look through. But again, most of those streams are people who already have a foundation and do not necessarily need to promotion.

Why is this an issue not specifically promoting smaller creators. This forces people to make the same content and have the same structure as everyone around them trying to get noticed just like them. This takes away form the creativity from people making videos at the start.

That the end. Just wanted to talk about an issue in social media that I know about. See you next time in my blog posts.

  1. Hi Ryan! I loved your podcast and I could not agree more with how unfair it is to small creators just starting out. It seems almost impossible to grow as a small creator because of the big creators getting all of the exposure even though they don't need it. I think your issue is something that should be talked about more because small creators deserve to grow just as much as the big creators.
