There was a huge soccer match this past Friday night. USA played Mexico in Cincinnati for their seventh world cup qualifying match. This means they are halfway through world cup qualifying for the 2022 world cup in Qatar.
The match is extremely important since Mexico was top
of the group before the match was played and if USA won the match, we would move
into first place above Mexico. The match was crazy! Pulisic is USA’s best
player but he has recently just come back from injury so he did not start. Usually,
USA starts off their matches slowly and does not play to well in the first half.
Mexico dominated the first half but thankfully did not get a goal. Then the
second half started and this is where the action truly began. The game became
more chippy and emotions started to rise up. USA started to look better but
Mexico was still getting the better chances. That was until Pulisic was subbed
into the game with 25 minutes to go. As soon as he came into the game the
mentally of the whole team felt different. The team seemed more confident since
he was on the field. Eight minutes after being subbed on Pulisic scored a header
from a cross to put USA in the lead! A few minutes later another goal would go
in for USA. Scored by another one of our superstars Weston McKennie to seal the
game.
This is monumental as the USA did not qualify for the
last world cup so to be on top of everyone halfway through games is amazing improvement.
Historically USA does not beat Mexico very often but this calendar year so far
USA has beat Mexico three times in a row. Which is the first time either team
has beaten the other three times in a row since 1937! This is the first time in
a long time that the USA men’s team is good and I cannot wait to see what this
group of young players accomplishes in the next decade.
I do not follow sports that much but this is very exciting! Especially for the USA team. I am shocked that we have not heard about this on the news. The World Cup is a big deal for many and I think I am going to try to be more aware of what's going on this year.
